Obesity in females leads to infertility, affects ovary
functioning: Study
Obesity can lead to infertility in
females. Young females, if put on weight in their reproductive age develop
polycystic ovarian disease that dampen the chances of having a baby. These are
the finding of a research study conducted on nearly 300 females by a city-based
fertility centre that claims morbid obesity in
the age group from 18 to 40 years decreases chances of pregnancy.
According to the study, which was conducted for a period of three years, out of 300 females nearly 90% of them developed polycystic ovarian disease, infertility with morbid obesity. The study was conducted at Mohak Hightech Speciality Hospital, which concluded that rates of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes may be lower in women who become pregnant after having bariatric surgery compared with rates in pregnant women who are obese. The study found that obese females who are infertile have variety of metabolic disturbances including infertility, insulin resistance, type-2 diabetes and hypertension. This is a part of their polycystic ovarian disease which itself resolves with bariatric surgery. "There are lesser chances of pregnancy in obese females however those who get pregnant have high pregnancy risks like pre eclampsia, gestational diabetes, macrosomia and cesarean delivery. There are fewer studies conducted on Indian females in reproductive age group with morbid obesity and infertility," said Dr Mohit Bhandari, a bariatric surgery specialist.
According to Dr Bhandari, weight loss surgery has huge positive implications on fertility rates of women in reproductive age. The study found that 90% cases improved fertility rates after loosing weight through surgery. He said, "I have operated several obese females of having average BMI around 45. 80% had type 2 DM due to severe insulin resistance. With the amount of stress and environment factors playing the major role the infertility rates have been increasing.

When confirmed from the gynaecologists they also supported
the fact that obesity disturbs hormone functioning in females and affect ovary.
Obesity if not treated at the right time also leads to infertility to an
extent. Dr Asha Baxi, gynaecologist and infertility specialist, said, "In
obese females especially in reproductive age disturb functioning of ovary. They
do not work the way they should. In some cases irregular hair growth also
occurs. It left untreated chances of diabetes cannot be ruled out." Out of
100 cases of obese females, there are chances of 30-35% cases that result into
fertility problems, she added.
